iPhones: SmartKeyboard Concept Gives the iPhone a Physical Keyboard

September 4th, 2011 by ytechcity

When Apple introduced the iPad 2, the Smart Cover also debuted as a new accessory for the device. Apple designed the iPad 2 with magnets that interface with the Smart Cover to wake the device from sleep when opened.

The iPhone’s virtual keyboard is a fantastic replacement for a physical keyboard, but some consider the lack of physical buttons to be the iPhone’s main downfall. A genius new concept takes the Smart Cover approach to offering a detachable physical keyboard for the iPhone…

Highlighted by Mobiflip, the SmartKeyboard concept, by Jing Yang, illustrates a tactical keyboard that can be removed and attached to the iPhone like the iPad’s Smart Cover. Instead of a slide out keyboard solution, the SmartKeyboard could be easily taken off the iPhone when not in use. This would give those that need a physical keyboard for typing longer emails or documents a temporary attachment.

This concept is sleek, beautiful, and totally Apple-like. The keyboard even has backlit keys. The SmartKeyboard would simple attach to the bottom of the iPhone with magnets. The only downside is that the keyboard would cover the home button when in use. But if you’re using the SmartKeyboard to type for longer periods of time, switching in and out of apps isn’t really that big of a deal.

August 24th, 2011 by ytechcity

Swype, the fast custom keyboard for Androids now has another update. Apart from your typical fast predictive input from a single motion on a screen, Swype now has several new gesture based features.

Now you can perform advanced actions such as copy, paste, cut and select all on Swype. Just Swype from the Swype Icon to either C (Copy), V (Paste) or X (Cut). To Select all, just swype from Swype Icon to A. There are other shortcuts as well, like Swyping from the icon to TW for Twitter or to GM for Google Maps.

For the majority that uses custom words or uncommon short forms, Swype now has a Personal Dictionary section where you can input and remove new words easily. This is pretty useful especially when getting rid of unwanted added new words.

To download, head to Swype Beta page here. Note: The new beta won’t work with devices that already have Swype pre-installed.

Tweetdeck released its open beta last week and has been very well received. They released a new version Thursday with increased functionality and blogged about how well the client has done since its release.

Gadgets: Dell Streak-The versatile 5-inch Android tablet

August 15th, 2010 by ytechcity

Dell is now selling their 5? screen havin’ tablet/phone, Streak, in their online shop for $299 subsidized by AT&T on contract and for $549 free and clear. Well, perhaps “free” isn’t the appropriate term, as an outright purchase will get you a carrier locked Streak with no frequency band support for T-Mobile 3G. Nevertheless, this gadget is garnering a great deal of buzz, if only for its screen size and Dell branding.

Streak ships with Android 1.6, but will be bumped up officially, to 2.1 before too long. Android hackers are paying particularly close to the Streak’s capabilities, and will be happy to know that some 2.1 firmware has been leaked over at MoDaCo forums, where users are reporting solid performance. This may not be the final version of the update that Dell will eventually release.
