iPhone News: iOS 4.3.3 Coming soon

April 30th, 2011 by ytechcity

In Apple’s recent response to the iPhone’s location-tracking database, the company mentions that an update to iOS is coming, “sometime in the next few weeks.”

Due to a bug in the iPhone’s location database, Apple plans pushing an incremental update to iOS very soon. There’s no word on an official release date, but we should be seeing iOS 4.3.3 before the end of next month.

In its Q&A, Apple said that the next update to iOS would include,

?reduces the size of the crowd-sourced Wi-Fi hotspot and cell tower database cached on the iPhone,
?ceases backing up this cache, and
?deletes this cache entirely when Location Services is turned off.
In the next major iOS software release the cache will also be encrypted on the iPhone.

So, no major updates to speak of, but people that were concerned about the privacy issues related to this location-tracking issue will be able to rest easy.

IPSWdownloader

If you’ve jailbroken or unlocked your iPhone, iPod, or iPad before you’re probably used to the usual procedure. You usually have to download the iOS IPSW firmware file in order to continue with the jailbreaking of your iDevice.

ipswDownloader by developer Vitaly Parovishnik makes this process a whole lot easier. The program not only downloads the IPSW firmware file for you, but also displays whether the firmware you’ve selected can be jailbroken and unlocked, along with the size of the IPSW and the tools needed to jailbreak the firmware.
This is a must-have application for all of our readers that are new to the jailbreak/unlock scene, and also for those of you that consider yourself iPhone experts. For upgrading to the newest jailbreak, this is definitely a nice utility to have at your fingertips.

But, ipswDownloader is only available for Mac OS X. You can download the app for free here.

Microsoft: Releases Internet Explorer 9 (IE9)

April 30th, 2011 by ytechcity

internet-explorer-9

After about 1 year of public testing since its 1st release of Platform Preview to developers on March 2010, Microsoft finally releases Internet Explorer 9 (IE9).

IE9 improves on support to the latest web technologies nowadays, including HTML5, CSS3, SVG, XHTML, and a new Javascript engine called “Chakra” (is this developed by Indian developers). It also features GPU-powered hardware acceleration for better and faster graphical and video support.

However, IE9 is only made available for Windows 7 and Windows Vista, and is not supporting Windows XP. This means that if you are still using Windows XP and want to use a modern web browser, you are forced to upgrade to later version of Windows, or you better change your favourite browser to the upcoming Firefox 4 or Chrome 9, which will also support for the latest web technologies, and at the same time still available to Windows XP.

Is it worth the download? Is it better than Google’s Chrome browser or Mozilla’s Firefox?

GPS: Garmin releases MalSingMaps Malaysia/Singapore/Brunei NT 2011.10 for free update

April 30th, 2011 by ytechcity

Garmin has made available MalSingMaps (MSM) Malaysia/Singapore/Brunei NT 2011.10 (2011-Q1) for free update now.

You can click here to download the installation file of MalSingMaps Malaysia/Singapore/Brunei NT 2011.10 from Garmin server. The download file is split into 4, and you just need to download the file relevant to your Garmin GPS navigator:

nuvi 3790
nuvi 1250
nuvi 1460, 1350, 765 or 255w
nuvi 205 or 205w
The installation file for nuvi 255w is 237MB (243,671KB), almost the same size with its previous version.

For nuvi 255w, the installation program requires you to have an SD Card slotted in your GPS before it can proceed. It will install gmapprom1.img (42,128KB) and SGMYMAL.JCV (215,403KB) into your SD Card instead of the flash memory of your GPS. This is something new from all the previous nuvi 255w MSM updates. Anyhow, the gmapprom1.unl file is still updated in the flash memory of the GPS.

In fact, you can move gmapprom1.img and SGMYMAL.JCV back to the flash memory of GPS after the installation.

During the installation process, you’ll be asked for the unlock key. The key is stored in the existing gmapprom1.unl file in your Garmin GPS navigator, which you can open with Notepad or any text editor. Just copy and paste the key to the installer when asked.
