iPhone Apps: Onavo- Save money by maximising your mobile data

May 30th, 2011 by ytechcity

Mobile data caps are a necessary evil. If network operators don’t impose caps, their networks will crash from the massive data load. When they do impose caps, subscribers cry foul. But that is the way it has to be, mobile networks can’t cope with data demand if operators continue offering buffet all-you-can-use data plans. We’ll just have to make do and make the most out of it.

Here’s a nifty app that helps you make the most out of your piddly mobile data caps.

The makers of Onavo claims that you can double or even triple your data usage when you use the app. Onavo routes and compresses pages that you want to access through cloud-based servers so that you use less data when downloading pages — by up to 80% says the developers.

Although Onavo would be great for daily for those on small data plans, the app is most useful when you’re roaming. As data roaming is typically charged on a pay-per-use plan, with Onavo, you would theoretically be using less data to use the same amount of internet.

It is a novel idea but it’s not without its downsides. Most obvious of which is privacy, while on Onavo, all your data traffic is routed through their servers, this means the people at Onavo can technically see what you’re surfing and read the emails that you’re sending. So if you’re doing some really P&C stuff, Onavo might not be for you.

Another downside is that Onavo doesn’t compress videos and it only works for data donwloads, not uploads. Also, because of the routing, some sites might take longer to load.

The app is available for free from the App Store and it supports iPad, iPhone 3GS and iPhone 4 running iOS 4.0 or later. iPod touch and iPhone 3G users are out of luck at the moment.

May 29th, 2011 by ytechcity

AndroidLoader is a new Cydia tweak developed by Surenix that allows a springboard in awesome style to organize their own Android applications. Basically it allows you to add icons for applications in a dedicated window that can be invoked by the user at any time.

After installing AndroidLoader from Cydia, you will have a new button in your iPhone dock. Simply slide this button up a folder-style list of all your applications will show up. From there, you can scroll up and down to find the app you’re looking for. Not sure how it works? Check out the video above.

AndroidLoader is now available in Cydia for $2.99.

Cydia Tweak: TidySpring- Clean Your iPhone Springboard

May 29th, 2011 by ytechcity

TidySpring is a new jailbreak application that brings easy springboard customization to your iPhone. The tweak is pretty simple and straightforward.

After installing the app from Cydia, you will have to go to the Settings app as TidySpring doesn’t come with its own icon. From there, you will have loads of options to turn on and off in order to customize your springboard the way you want it. But don’t just take my word for it, check out the video below to see TidySpring in action…

TidySpring allows you to hide icons labels, folders labels, their badges, hide wallpaper background, and disable multitasking. You can also disable pages dot, icons reflection, and LockScreen. You can also enable “Grid Locking” functionality, disable volume HUD and take an invisible screenshot. There are probably a few other options that I forgot to mention.

The tweak is available in Cydia for $0.99. Although it doesn’t provide the same level of customization as its competitors SpringClean and Springtomize, it seems to do a pretty good job too.

Cydia Tweak: iTransmission– the Torrent Download Client for iOS

iphone-bt-iTransmission

iTransmission is a free jailbreak app that allows you to download torrents straight to your iPhone. iTransmission has been a hugely popular torrent client on non-mobile platforms, and iTransmission aims at making it easy to download torrents right from your iPhone.

iTransmission has the cleanest interface of any torrent client I’ve used on the iPhone. Like it’s desktop companion, the app works great and offers plenty of features. The iOS app is currently in its Alpha stages of testing, so there are still some bugs and glitches that need to be worked out.

When you’ve installed iTransmission in Cydia, the app’s icon is added to your iPhone’s springboard. When you tap the app, you are greeted with iTransmission’s list of active or paused downloads. Torrent and magnet files can be added within iTransmission to begin the download process. Simply tap the “+” button and add the desired .torrent URL. When a file has been added, the transfer will be paused by default. You can start and pause your downloads at any time during the whole process.

When a downloaded is completed, you’ll have the option to either remove the torrent itself or also remove the data associated with that torrent. If you want to keep what you downloaded, keep the data. You can use iFile or another SSH tool to grab the file later.

iTransmission is a nice app for downloading torrents directly on your iPhone. The project is open source. You can check out the Google Code page for more information.
