Siri: Lost in Translation

October 23rd, 2011 by ytechcity

What did we tell you about Siri having problems with the way Asians speak English? Check out this video showing the usually articulate Siri struggling to understand an English-speaking Japanese guy.

Siri is awesome but probably not so in other countries. How would think Siri will fair with the way we Malaysians speak English?

Apple: Siri Can Also Search Bing and Yahoo

If you’ve spent any time with Siri, you may have noticed that you can actually ask it to search the web for pretty much anything. At this point, Siri fires up a Google search and populates the search field with whatever it thinks you asked. The degree of accuracy here very much depends on your accent and whether it’s a full moon or not, but on the whole, it does the job fairly well.

But did you know that you can also have Siri work its magic with both the Microsoft Bing and Yahoo search engines? Well, you can…

In a post on Search Engine Land, Danny Sullivan reminds us that, should Google not be your search engine of choice, you can always tell Siri which flavor of search you wish to use.

The key is adding the word “Bing” or “Yahoo” to your query, such as, “search Bing for weather” or “search yahoo for Apple earnings.” Siri heads off to the relevant search engine, and you’re golden.

If you prefer to use any one search engine as a default, you can always set that in the iPhone’s Settings, in which case you’d need to say “search Google” to use Google.com. Either way, there’s a little more flexibility here than we first thought.

News: Box offers 50 GB storage to iOS users

Box.net is taking advantage of the hype surrounding the iPhone 4S and iCloud by offering 50 GB of free storage to iPhone and iPad owners. Normally, 50GB of Box.net storage would cost you $20 per month, with the free plan only offering 5GB. Box also has one huge advantage over most similar services in that it allows multiple users to collaborate on file(s) at the same time.

The promotion is live now and will last for 50 days so you have plenty of time to sign up. To claim your 50 GB account, you have to download the Box.net app to your iOS device and login with your account credentials. If you don’t have an account, you can sign up for one on your device.

Once you login, your account will be upgraded to 50 GB. These extra 50 GBs are yours to keep for as long as you have your box.net account.

However, since iCloud storage is currently useless for anyone that doesn’t use iWork, and most people probably have few individual files larger than 100MB to share, Box is an attractive option that’s difficult to pass-up on.

Take a look at this video especially towards the end when Siri answers “noted”. The computing that goes on behind this piece of software is extraordinary. We will say that Siri is one very intelligent piece of code and this video demonstrates Siri’s intelligence amazingly.

Question now is, is Siri practical in everyday use? Especially when you’re talking to it in noisy environments. What do you think?

Apple: Introducing Siri on iPhone 4S

October 5th, 2011 by ytechcity

Siri on iPhone 4S lets you use your voice to send messages, schedule meetings, place phone calls, and more. Ask Siri to do things just by talking the way you talk. Siri understands what you say, knows what you mean, and even talks back. Siri is so easy to use and does so much, you’ll keep finding more and more ways to use it.

Now you can use your voice to use your iPhone. Just talk to Siri as you would to a person: “Do I need an umbrella?” or “Any great burgers around here?” or “Where’s the closest ATM?” Siri not only understands what you say, it knows what you mean.1 It figures out the right apps to use to find the right answer. Then, just like a personal assistant, it answers you. Siri makes phone calls, sends messages, schedules meetings, sets reminders, and more. How much more? Just ask, and Siri tells you that, too.
