Since YTL Comms release Yes, the new 4G mobile service in Malaysia, P1 has added a new modem into their Super Broadband Package. The UH Shuttle modem is a new add-on option for RM30/month which they claims to be more powerful than the old WiGGY.

Looking at the design, it looks more bulky than the old one making it more cumbersome to use. For extra RM10 over the older WiGGY, we simply can’t see the benefit of paying more. P1?s coverage out of home isn’t that great and we are not convinced if this new modem would solve coverage and mobility issues that we faced previously.

Check out the full details of the add-on package at P1’s site.

November 4th, 2010 by ytechcity

YTL Communications (subsidiary and the communications utility of YTL Power International) tonight has revealed its 4G service brand. The name is simple and its called YES. They slogan is “say YES to faster 4G mobile internet with voice“.

4G Mobile Internet + Voice
They also announced that there will be a land grab for 018 mobile numbers starting from 4 Nov 2010. It is believed that Yes will commence voice service on Day 1 of launch. To book or register your number, keep a look out on their website http://yes.my.

YES ID
Interestingly the voice service is different from the rest. Yes claims that they will offer full cloud-based services allowing you to sync your contacts directly. Plus, when you register your 018 number, you’ll also get your YesID which comes with an email address e.g. ytechcity@yes.my. Pricing for Yes service will be based on Pay As You Go model. This is because Yes believes that consumers should pay for what they use, just like electricity. Anyhow, the rate will be announce on 19th Nov 2010.

YES DEVICES: USB, MiFi, Desktop Modem & 4G Phone
Now to the devices. Their USB 4G Modem will be called YES Go while their MiFi device is called YES Huddle. Meanwhile 4G phone will be called YES Buzz and its all in one home modem with voice and WiFi will be called YES Zoom. The YES Buzz 4G phone is SIM-less and all you need is your YesID. Pretty simple and direct naming for their products.

YES 4G Coverage
In terms of coverage, YES claims to have more than 1000 base stations covering 65% of Peninsular Malaysia. As comparison they claim P1 to have less than 800 base stations. That’s a massive difference considering P1 had started earlier!

Apple: 7-inch touchscreen iPad 2 is coming end of this year

August 21st, 2010 by ytechcity

The Economic Daily, according to major Taiwanese newspaper which was among the first to correctly report that Apple was making a tablet claims that the same company is now working on the iPad 2.

Nothing much is revealed about the specification, but, Apple is readying another tablet similar to the iPad but with a 7-inch touchscreen for launch as early as end of this year. The current iPad screen is 9.7-inch.

According to this report from Apple Insider , production on the iPad 2 is already under way in China
Chimei Innolux will supply 7-inch LCD screens, which use the same IPS (in-plane switching) technology found in the original iPad, which improves viewing angles and colour on LCD screens. Touchscreen technology for the screens will come from Cando Corporation.

Apple has also tapped Compal Electronics, one of the world’s largest contract laptop computer makers, to assemble the new iPad.

The companies named in the Economic Daily report declined to comment. Contract manufacturers and component makers normally do not reveal what products they’re working on because failure to maintain secrecy can cause them to miss out on future contracts.
