How to set Preferred Domain via Google Webmaster Tools

Search engines treat http://domain.com and http://www.domain.com as two different sites. Whether you www or no-www, it is advised that you choose one of them to avoid duplicated content and negative ranking.

To solve the issue, we normally set a 301 Redirection to redirect search bots from one to another. Now we can set the preference on Google Webmaster tools preferred domain?

Simply tick your preferred domain, www or no-www then click OK button. It may take some time for Google bots to reflect the changes in their index. No guarantee though. Once done, your preferred domain will be used in Google search results.

Once you tell Google preferred domain name, Google will use that information for all future crawls of your site and indexing refreshes. For instance, if you specify your preferred domain as http://www.example.com and we find a link to your site that is formatted as http://example.com, google will follow that link as http://www.example.com instead. In addition, there will take your preference into account when displaying the URLs. If you don’t specify a preferred domain, Google may treat the www and non-www versions of the domain as separate references to separate pages.
